Sometimes you don't need a full turnkey site — just the design — because you have a developer, you're rebranding, or you want a new look on an existing structure. This article explains what exactly you buy under "web design", what it costs on its own, and what drives the price.
What "web design" covers
- Research — goals, audience, competitors, the content that has to fit.
- Structure and wireframe — the layout of the blocks before the visuals.
- UI design of the key screens — home, an inner page, a service/product page, contact, blog.
- Design system — colours, typography, buttons, components, states — so the site stays consistent.
- Responsive versions — how it looks on phone and tablet, not just desktop.
- Prototype (optional) — a clickable mockup to test the flow before development.
Not "web design": picking a stock theme and swapping the logo. That's configuration, not design.
When you buy design only
- You have your own developer or team who will implement it.
- Rebranding — a new look on a site whose structure works.
- A redesign of the visuals only, with no functional change — see website redesign — pricing.
- You need a design to present to an investor or management before investing in development.
Price ranges
| Scope | Price | Timeline |
|---|---|---|
| Landing / 1–3 screens | €300 – €700 | 1 week |
| Business site / 5–8 unique screens | €700 – €1,500 | 1–2 weeks |
| Larger project + design system | €1,500 – €4,000 | 2–4 weeks |
For comparison — the cost of a full site with development is in how much a website costs.
Design and development — together or separately
When one team does both the design and the development, it is usually cheaper and faster — no handover between designer and developer, nothing lost in translation, the designer knows what is realistic to build. A separate design makes sense when your own team will do the development, or when the design is a standalone deliverable (e.g. for a presentation).
What drives the price
- Number of unique screens — not total pages, but how many different layouts.
- Design system — a full system costs more but saves time later on extensions.
- Number of revision rounds — fix them in the quote (e.g. 2 rounds).
- Responsive versions — phone and tablet as part of the price, not an extra.
- Prototype and testing — adds value for more complex flows, and adds cost.
Summary
Web design alone costs €300–700 for a landing page, €700–1,500 for a business site and €1,500–4,000 with a full design system. If we also do the development, the design is usually part of the overall quote for the site and works out cheaper than buying it separately.
