The site is finished, looks good, but searching your business name or service on Google turns up nothing. Before suspecting a complex SEO problem, check these five common, easy-to-fix causes.

1. robots.txt is blocking indexing

Common, especially after a site migration — a leftover Disallow: / line from a dev or staging version blocks the entire site from search engines.

Fix: Check yoursite.com/robots.txt — there should be no line blocking the whole site.

2. A missing or wrong canonical tag / noindex

A noindex meta tag left active after development is the second most common cause. Google respects an explicit "don't index" instruction, even on a technically perfect site.

Fix: Check the page source for <meta name="robots" content="noindex">.

3. The site was never submitted to Google Search Console

A new site isn't indexed automatically right away — it can take weeks if Google hasn't been directly notified via a sitemap.

Fix: Register the site in Google Search Console and submit sitemap.xml manually.

4. A slow site with poor Core Web Vitals

A slow-loading site may be technically indexed but rank far down in results. See a full explanation of the metrics in Core Web Vitals explained simply.

Fix: Optimise images, enable caching, move to faster hosting if needed.

5. Missing structured content and meta descriptions

A page without a title, meta description or clear content structure gives Google fewer signals about what it's actually about — and ranks lower even when technically indexed.

Fix: Every page should have a unique title, meta description and clear H1/H2 structure.

If the problem persists

If you've checked all five and the site still isn't ranking well, a deeper technical audit is probably needed — missing SSL migration, duplicate content between www and non-www, or server speed issues. This is part of the ongoing SEO maintenance we offer.
